How to stay fit while traveling – 5 simple steps
When at home, it is quite easy to integrate your fitness and nutrition needs into your daily life. You know where to find your favorite yoghurt, you know the market times and are known at the local farmers veggie stall already. You love the Lebanese kiosk around the corner and know the best parks where to work out after all the delicious food. New places, new faces – and you have no idea where to go. But no worries, it is actually not hard to find places to work out, great and cheap local markets as well as your ne favorite restaurants. Even if you are just there for a few days, you will have no problem to find these gems and work out with these 5 steps:
When you arrive in a new place, either a city, an island, a village or whatever place you go, the best ever way to explore is walking. It is not only the best way to get to know your surroundings but also a got start for your work out. You can breath the new air, get used to the streets, people, places, shops and just find everything you need. Watch out for your favorite foods and have a look where especially locals are eating. That is always a good sign that this restaurant is a good one and worth the money.
But how do you find the real hidden gems and local places? Just get lost! You will find the way back later and if you are not sure, just ask the locals. Don’t forget to take a business card or a map form where you are staying so they can easily help you but don’t be afraid to totally loose yourself within the roads as this is how you find the best places. Little street food places, book stores to hide or great parks for your daily work out. You will be surprised how much this destination has to offer for you!
So you found your new favorite bench overlooking the sea? A hidden little beach with a palm tree and a swing to relax? Or just the highest rooftop overlooking the bustling city? Well then have a seat, take a deep breath and stretch! What, stretch? Exactly, I am not telling you to get into Yoga or meditation now but just try to relax, see what is right in front of you and stretch your muscles. If you try it once you will see how much oxygen will flood your blood and you will be overwhelmed by new energy for the day. It’s just such a great way to enjoy the moment and see what is around you. I often sit in spots like this, watch the nature, listen to waves or just watch the people around me. Needless to say that there are some people starring at me as if I am a new yellow alien and my UFO is just about to land in front of them. But as you anyways live better if you don’t mind what others think of you I just smile and let them stare. And it’s loads of fun to be in one spot and see all those movements around you.
Well obviously you read this article cause you want to stay fit while you are traveling. And there is no better way then to dance. I am not kidding. You can literally dance anywhere, anytime and however you want. Get some music in your ears and off you go! The beach, the park, a dance school, your hotel or the night club – whatever it is, make it your dance floor! Dancing is such a great work out, cause it not only trains your cardio and condition but also all muscles at ones. You definitely need your legs, as they will move you around. Your arms will instantly come up and move to the rhythm which keeps them in shape. And as you will move not only arms and legs but also the rest of your body, your abs will be happy to help out. Now is there any other sports which trains all of these at once AND is that much fun? I kinda doubt it 😉
4| USE NATURE AS A TOOL FOR YOUR WORK OUT.
What? Yeah! I mean, did you never look at the tree and thought about pull-ups? Or looking at that lower fencer thinking of push-ups? Ok right I gotta explain that a bit better then. So you might be a gym rat or not a “workout with machines” – type of guy/girl at all. But let me tell you, that our nature just offers great ways to work out, for free! So imagine you would be in your gym, using all the tools, what could you use instead in the nature? Here we go – suddenly you find handle bars for pull ups in the tree just in front of your door or that fence next to your house builds a good little replacement for your dance pole so you can use that for the stretching exercises after your work out. There are plenty other possibilities if you just keep your eyes open.
5| EAT WELL.
We all love german Schnitzel, those especially crunchy french fries from Belgium and all those deserts from Italy! But shouldn’t we also love all this lovely fresh fruit and vegetables from the market, the fresh made greek yoghurt and the fresh salad with the home made dressing? It’s all about the right balance. I have never been a person who would leave out a fabulous cake just because of this 500 calories inside, I’d rather dance 3hours more in the night club afterwards 😉
But honestly, it’s not the one cake that makes a difference, but the daily essence of your nutrition. Keep it balanced, get loads of vitamins and fresh fruit, drink enough water and add lemon to it, to ensure you got all the Vitamin C you need. If you want to eat sweets or heavy foods such as fast food then make sure the rest of your day will be filled with healthy food. I always recommend to cut out sodas from your nutrition, since the unnatural sugar is poison to your body. Even so a Coke after a night full of dancing in the night club can be so good. You got my point, it’s all about the balance.
If you follow these 5 simple steps you can be sure you will stay fit while traveling. And as you see it is really easy to integrate them in your travel itinerary.
